The Pink Bonnet by Liz Tolsma (True Colors series)

Back in 2019 Barbour Books published a series called True Colors: Historical  Stories of American Crime. This series is described as: "True, riveting stories of American criminal activity are explored through 12 unique stories of historical romantic suspense. Collect them all and be inspired by the hope that always finds its way even in the darkest of times."

The Pink Bonnet by Liz Tolsma is the second book in this series. You can visit this website to see all 12 books that are part of this series.  This crime story takes place in Memphis, Tennessee.

From the Back Cover:

Something sinister overshadows the Tennessee Children's Home Society

True Colors--Fiction Based on Strange-But-True-History

Widowed in Memphis during 1933, Cecile Dowd is struggling to provide for her three-year-old daughter, Millie. Cecile unwittingly trusts a neighbor who puts little Millie into the clutches of Georgia Tann, corrupt Memphis Tennessee Children's Home Society director suspected of the disappearance of hundreds of children. With the help of a sympathetic lawyer, their search for Millie uncovers a deep level of corruption that threatens their very lives. How far will a mother go to find out what happened to her child?

My Thoughts:

This story was hard to read. I think anything dealing with children going missing or being abused will be difficult to read. I found the history surrounding this crime story from Tennessee interesting. It's hard to believe that people could be so calculating and deceptive to gain power and wealth at the expense of children. Some of the story seemed unbelievable, but it made me wonder about what lengths actual parents would go to to find their missing children. I would assume there probably wasn't too much help for them. Many of the characters in this story are fictional. Only the main characters--Georgia Tann, Judge Camille Kelley, and E.H. Crump--are true to life.

This is a story that may pique your interest in learning more about the actual events that happened at the Tennessee Children's Home Society. You can read more in two books by Lisa Wingate: Before We Were Yours and Before and After: the real-life sequel to Before We Were Yours. You can find those books here on this website.

My Rating: ★★★

About the Author:

Passionate might best describe me. I’m passionate about my writing, about my family, and about God. I started on this publication journey in 2011 and am so blessed that I get to work at my dream job every day. I love nothing better than settling into my comfy office chair at the big desk my husband built for me and letting my imagination go crazy.

I also love editing, especially helping new authors hone their skills and start on their own publication journeys. I have a passion for seeing others succeed in this business. There is also room for more well-written books.
