The Love Note by Joanna Davidson Politano

Imagine writing a love note that you never delivered, and instead tucked it away and forgot about it. But many years later, someone else discovers this mysterious letter and is determined to solve the mystery of this undelivered love letter. This sweet story, The Love Note, is about such a letter. A letter that makes it way throughout the house in which it was written making it's mark on each heart. But will it ever be delivered to the intended recipient?

From the Back Cover:

A forgotten letter. A secret love. A vast estate.

Focused on a career in medicine and not on romance, Willa Duvall is thrown slightly off course during the summer of 1865 when she discovers a never-opened love letter in a crack of her old writing desk. Compelled to find the passionate soul who penned it and the person who never received it, she takes a job as a nurse at the seaside estate of Crestwicke Manor.

Everyone at Crestwicke has feelings--mostly negative ones--about the man who wrote the letter, but he seems to have disappeared. With plenty of enticing clues but few answers, Willa's search becomes even more complicated when she misplaces the letter and it passes from person to person in the house, each finding a thrilling or disheartening message in its words.

Laced with mysteries large and small, this romantic Victorian-era tale of love lost, love deferred, and love found is sure to delight.

My Thoughts:

I loved this story! The idea for the book, a mysterious hidden love note, was so clever. I loved seeing how Miss Willa Duvall's character changes throughout the story. She's so self-assured and determined that she doesn't need the love of a man in her perfectly planned out life. Yet, this letter affects her so much after finding it, that she must find out who wrote it. I also loved how the note after being misplaced by Willa was picked up by different people affecting each one deeply. "Words have power" is the message throughout this story, and that is certainly the truth. Words do have the power to shape lives for good or for bad, so choose them wisely. This story's mystery is fun to try and solve. The twists and turns are not easily figured out, and the outcome at the end satisfies all curiosity. I have been impressed with Joanna Davidson Politano's writing. Her stories are always interesting and let the reader's mind search and wander as Joanna weaves her tales. Each reader is left fully satisfied at the end for having read a book that exercised their mind and gave them something lasting to think about. She has quickly become a favorite author for me. So make sure to pick up this newest novel and check out her other books too!

A Haven for Her Heart by Susan Anne Mason (Redemption's Light 1)

Imagine finding out a choice you have made has led to a situation that will change your life forever. Susan Anne Mason has written a story about a young woman, Olivia Rosetti, who experiences a life changing situation that leads her down a path that seems insurmountable. Can she overcome the evil she has been dealt?  This new series by Susan Anne Mason is called Redemption's Light, and A Haven for Her Heart is the first book in series.

From the Back Cover:

Upon her release from a woman's reformatory in 1941 Toronto, Olivia Rosetti wants nothing more than to forget the horrors of her time there and return to normal. But with her family unwilling to forgive and employers wary of hiring her, she quickly ends up desperate and homeless--until a chance encounter with well-to-do widow Ruth Bennington. The two discover they share a painful history and together decide to open a maternity home for troubled women.

Greek widower Darius Reed is determined to protect his daughter from the prejudice that killed her mother and hopes to marry into a prominent Toronto family. But when his employer orders him to persuade Ruth Bennington to sell them her property, Darius soon becomes conflicted over his feelings about the home and his attraction to Olivia.

Despite finding fulfillment in her work, Olivia must fight not only bitter memories and the community's negative reaction to their mission, but also feelings for the man who is trying to close her home. can love prove stronger than prejudice and societal pressures, or will past mistakes destroy her chance at true happiness?

My Thoughts:

This was an interesting story. I liked how the author had a note at the beginning of the book to share how this book came about and about the real life person, Velma Demerson, that inspired the character of Olivia Rosetti. Who knew that Canada had a law that an unmarried, pregnant woman could be cast into prison? The characters each had their own baggage to work through, Olivia with her family and incarceration, and Darius Reed with the death of his wife from racial violence. Each situation brings about the reminder that one never knows what another is truly facing. Many situations in life are not tied with a neat bow, but are often complex. This story will remind you to look past the outward appearances and to strive to learn more about a person before judging them.  While this book isn't a light read, it is a story worth reading. So, take a trip down a road that will show you what life was like 80 years ago in Toronto, Canada where prejudice ran high.

A Portrait of Loyalty by Roseanna M. White

The third book in Roseanna M. White's series The Codebreakers has released! A Portrait of Loyalty picks up the story in late February 1918 as the world heads toward the conclusion of World War I in November 1918. This time the author brings in a Russian to the codebreaker team.

From the Back Cover:

He sees patterns in what she deems chaos. She sees beauty in a world he thought destroyed.

Zivon Marin was one of Russia's top cryptographers until the October Revolution tore apart his world. Forced to flee to England after speaking out against Lenin, Zivon is driven by a growing anger and determined to offer his services to the Brits. But never far from his mind is his brother, whom Zivon fears died in the train crash that separated them.

Lily Blackwell sees the world best through the lens of a camera and possesses unsurpassed skill when it comes to retouching and re-creating photographs. With her father's connections in propaganda, she's recruited to the intelligence division, even though her mother would disapprove if she ever found out.

After Captain Blackwell invites Zivon to dinner one evening, a friendship blooms between him and Lily that soon takes over their hearts. But both have secrets they're unwilling to share, and neither is entirely sure they can trust the other. When Zivon's loyalties are called into question, proving him honest is about more than one couple's future dreams--it becomes a matter of ending the war.

 My Thoughts:

Like Roseanna's other books in this series, A Portrait of Loyalty also has a great story. The story took me back to a tumultuous time in history and gave me a glimpse of what life was like during the first world war.  The codebreakers are facinating to me. It's amazing the way they can solve puzzles with code and language so quickly. This series also mentions the Bolshevik Revolution which I thought was a great addition to the historical scene. The Russians were having their own battles that they were facing during this time too. And can you honestly have a spy book without having a Russian make an appearance? Of course not! This story will pull at your heartstrings so be prepared for that. Not everything is all roses especially with the sudden appearance of the Spanish Flu. A timely story for this point in our own history. Of course, our illness in 2020 is not to the vast effect that the Spanish Flu had on the world.
I would definitely recommend this series. It was a great one to read, so make sure to check out the books in her Codebreaker series. You can read my review of her first two books in the series by clicking on the titles:  The Number of Love (Book 1) and Wings of Devotion (Book 2).

The Christmas Swap by Melody Carlson

Melody Carlson has a new Christmas book coming out just in time for the upcoming season. The Christmas Swap is about two young adults who stumble across each other's paths when they swap houses for Christmas.

Emma Daley has always joined the Landers for Christmas since her family is overseas in Africa helping with a mission. But this year, the Landers from Arizona have agreed to swap houses with a family from Colorado. Since Emma cannot pass up the opportunity to see snow for the first time, she agrees to spend Christmas with the Landers in Colorado.

West did not sign up to swap his house for Christmas, but his stepfather came up with this grand scheme. When West misses his flight from Colorado to Arizona to meet-up with his family for Christmas, he gets caught at home by the Landers. Quickly, he comes up with a story about being the caretaker.  After meeting Emma, West feels drawn enough to this girl to see if she could be the one for him.

My Thoughts:

This story moves quickly, and I actually read it in a day. That's pretty quick considering I'm a mom of 3 kiddos. Melody's stories remind me of hallmark movies. They are sweet, romantic and short. This is great if you're looking for something that is a fun, and easy read. I thought that the story was cute, and I liked the characters. Emma and West had likeable personalities, contrasted with Mrs. Landers and Gllian, Emma's longtime friend. These two ladies could complain, grumble and use people like professionals. They were definitely the Scrooges of the story. One thing that I didn't like was that the story ended so abruptly. I would have liked a little more closure, but I guess that is where your imagination must complete the story line for you.

If you're looking for a cute, short story to pick up and read for this Christmas season, pick up Melody's new book and be whisked away to the mountains of Colorado and a budding, winter romance.

The Gentleman Spy by Erica Vetsch and a Giveaway!!

Do you enjoy reading about a bygone era of Dukes and Earls, and women in fancy ball gowns? Erica Vetsch has a new series that takes place during the Regency Era in England called Serendipity and Secrets. This book The Gentleman Spy is the second book in her new series. You can read my review of the first book, The Lost Lieutenant by clicking here. There's something romantic and charming about the Regency Era that intrigues us during this modern age. Of course, as you'll see in this book, much of the big problems of that era are brought to light too!

From the Back Cover:
When Marcus Haverly's father and older brother unexpectedly pass away, the new Duke of Haverly is saddled with a title he never expected to bear--and more eyes suddenly turned toward his life than a secret agent for the Crown can afford.
To thwart the plans of the rest of his scheming family, the duke impulsively marries one of the Season's young debutantes. After all, a properly raised noblewoman is meek and mild. Sequestering Lady Charlotte in the country and getting on with his work as a spy should be easy.
His new bride has other ideas. No shrinking violet, she's determined to take her place as his wife, front and center--no hiding in rustication. As a duchess, she can use her position to follow her call from God and help the lowest of society: the women forced into prostitution because they have no skills or hope. But these philanthropic, reforming endeavors are not met favorably in society, nor by her husband who wishes she'd remain in the background as he ordered.
Can the duke succeed in relegating her to the sidelines of his life? When his secrets are threatened with exposure, will his new wife be an asset or a liability?

My Thoughts:
I enjoyed this book even more than the first one in this series. What is not to like about a spy story?! The story was engaging, delightful, and full of mystery, danger and heroics. The characters were likable, entertaining and pulled me into the story. I enjoyed the mystery of finding out who was actually behind the attempt on the Prince Regent's life in the first book of the series. And I liked how the first and second books connected the characters with friends and family. The book does approach the subject of the vast problem with prostitution during the time along with society overlooking the indiscretions of upper society. And this issue has not gone away. We are now seeing more and more being made known about human trafficking in our day and age. I appreciated the author's treatment of this subject and the approach of the main character to have a heart to reach out to those in need!
I'm looking forward to continuing this series and reading the third book, called The Indebted Earl which is a story about the Duke's sister, Lady Sophia Haverly and is coming soon!

My Rating: ★★★★★

Don't forget about the Giveaway and enter by tonight!!!

The Crushing Depths by Dani Pettrey (Coastal Guardians series book 2)

Dani's newest release in the Coastal Guardians series, The Crushing Depths, starts off with a bang leading readers on a quite a ride as Coasties, Rissi and Mason, try to discover why a man is dead aboard an oil-rig in the ocean.

From the Back Cover:
When an accident claims the life of an oil-rig worker, Coast Guard Investigators Rissi Dawson and Mason Rogers are flown to the scene thirty-eight miles from shore. Tensions aboard the rig are high, and the death has everyone on edge. Environmental activists just off the rig's starboard side are threatening to do whatever it takes to stop the "plague on the environment" from continuing its work. Meanwhile, rumors are circulating on board about an ancient curse lurking in the depths below.
Mounting evidence shows the death might not have been an accident. Was the man killed by one of the activists or, more frighteningly, a member of his own crew? Rissi and Mason have to sort through not only numerous suspects, but also their own haunted past and their attraction to each other.
Just as the case seems about to break open, worse news arrives: a tropical storm has turned their way. Now they're cut off from any rescue--right where the killer wants them.

My Thoughts:
I really enjoyed this book, and I thought it was even better than the first book in this series. Rissi and Mason's story has it all, murder mystery, legendary curse, frightening storm, and of course, a love story. It's fun to see these two longtime friends with a deep connection born out of adversity come back into each others lives after such a long time. The mystery throughout the story is fun to solve as the characters piece together more and more of the clues. This story also sets up some other fun interaction for the other characters on this CGIS team, and it's a great lead in for their upcoming stories. This book was quite a ride from cover to cover and I would highly recommend it.

Are you looking for a new board book for your child ages 1-5 years old? This cute new story, The Great Farmapalooza by Jill Roman Lord is a wonderful book to pick up and add to your library! So many animals in the barnyard and each one of them is praising the God who made them. The story has such cute rhyming phrases throughout the book, and the illustrations are colorful and fun to look at for your toddler or preschooler. The added flaps to open gives them a surprise on each page. I thought the book was well done and would be a wonderful addition to your home library!

The Heart of a Hero by Susan May Warren (Global Search and Rescue book 2)

The second book in Susan May Warren's Global Search and Rescue series has released, and this time readers get to hang on for a ride through a Category 5 Hurricane filled with more than just problems from the weather. So buckle up and get ready for an adventurous story about Aria and Jake.

From the Back Cover:
Jake Silver may not be able to put the memories of his time as a sniper and Navy SEAL behind him, but at least he can put his skills to use as a part of the Jones Inc. rescue team. Saving the life of pediatric heart surgeon Dr. Aria Sinclair on Denali helped too. But now he can't get her out of his head.
Aria has dedicated her life to helping children born with defective hearts. After all, she was one of those children. Driven to succeed, she lives a lonely, stressful life. One she would have lost on Denali if it hadn't been for Jake. Jake is exciting and handsome, but he's also dangerous, and she's already lost one person she loves. She can't bear it again.
It's not until she finds herself trapped in the middle of a Category 4 hurricane that she can admit she needs Jake desperately. With their very survival in the balance, can they hope for a second chance at life... and love?

My Thoughts:
This book is definitely packed with adventure. Once the storms start, it seems like they blow through one after another. Aria and Jake both have a lot of past baggage. The author does a good job helping the reader to see the internal struggle both Aria and Jake have with the heavy guilt they have unsuccessfully tried to overcome. I appreciated the wisdom shared with Aria and Jake from other minor characters throughout the story. It was encouraging. I also enjoyed the second story weaved throughout this book about Ham and what happened with Signe. This is an interesting mystery that keeps the reader guessing. I enjoyed reading this book and thought it was a fun, engaging story.

The Killing Tide by Dani Pettrey

Since I live in a city that is known as Coast Guard City USA, I was excited to pick up Dani Pettrey's newest series, Coastal Guardians. The first book, The Killing Tide, takes readers on a wild ride with the Coast Guard as they investigate possible drug runners, murders and a lot of evidence that just doesn't add up.

From the Back Cover:
When one Coast Guard officer is found dead and another goes missing, Coast Guard Investigative Service special agent Finn Walker faces his most dangerous crime yet. His only clues are what little evidence remains aboard the dead officer's boat, and the direction the clues point to will test Finn and the Guard to their limits.

When investigative reporter--and Finn's boss's sister--Gabby Rowley arrives, her unrelenting questions complicate an already volatile situation. Now that she's back, the tug on Finn's heart is strong, but with the risks she's taking for her next big story, he fears she might not live through it.

Thrown together by the heinous crime, Finn and Gabby can't ignore the sparks or judgments flying between them. But will they be able to see past their preconceptions long enough to track down an elusive killer, or will they become his next mark?

You can check out Dani's Pinterest board with inspiration about her characters by clicking here.

My Thoughts:
This story was exciting from the first page. I love the Coast Guard, and my family's closest friends are in the Coast Guard. So when I read that one of my favorite authors was writing a series about the Coast Guard, I knew I definitely wanted to read this newest series. This story begins with a lot of characters on the CGIS team and flips around a lot by telling the story from several point-of-views. At first that was difficult to navigate and maybe that was due to me reading this as an e-book. But after I realized the story was shifting back and forth, I was able to recognize the change more readily. I think that all of the switching around for the point-of-views may be annoying for some, but I found that it gave a glimpse into each character to set up the rest of this series in future books. I like that Dani writes about a group of people and then gives each main character their own spotlight in a separate book. It creates that feeling of family. I also liked how Dani wrote in many of the silent prayers the team members had throughout the story. I thought it was a great way to communicate their relationship with God and show their dependence on Him as they lived their lives.
Gabby is quite the character, and can make even the most tolerant reader frustrated. She does go through a good change though as the story moves along. I will say that it's pretty unlikely that an investigative reporter would be allowed in on a CGIS investigation even if they are family. That seemed a little unbelievable for me.
Overall, the story was good, and many of the characters have interesting histories, so it will be fun to see what Dani does with that in future books. While I enjoyed reading this book and the fast-paced story, it was not my favorite of Dani's books. I'm hoping the next book, The Crushing Depths, is a better read.

My Rating:
★★★★

Stories That Bind Us by Susie Finkbeiner

Have you walked away from reading a book where the flow of thought was easy to read and the end of the story left you satisfied? Susie Finkbeiner's new book, Stories That Bind Us  is one of those stories.

From the Back Cover:
Betty Sweet never expected to be a widow at forty. With so much life still in front of her, she tries to figure out what's next, never imagining what God had in mind.
When her estranged sister returns to town, Betty finds herself taking on the care of a five-year-old nephew she never knew she had. In 1960's small-town Michigan, they make an odd pair. Betty with her pink button nose and bouffant hair. Hugo with his light brown skin and large brown eyes. But more powerful than what makes them different is what they share: the heartache of an empty space in their lives. Slowly, they will learn to trust one another as they discover common ground and healing through the magic of storytelling.

My Thoughts:
Now here is a story that is satisfying to read. Susie Finkbeiner touches all kinds of emotions as she leads the reader through a story that is mixed with shock, questioning, sadness, determination and joy. Since the story takes place in the 1960's, the author doesn't shy away from hard topics like racism, depression and anxiety, and death of a loved one, but brings them up with such care and grace throughout the book. I loved that the book takes place in my home state of Michigan. It's always fun to read about cities you're familiar with, and my home city of Grand Haven even got a mention. Betty Sweets' character is so down-to-earth, and I loved the stories she made up to tell her young nephew, Hugo. I can't say enough good about this book and would highly recommend it! A Sneak Peek at Roseanna's new book, Dreams of Savannah

Roseanna M. White has a new stand alone book coming out called Dreams of Savannah.  Here's a fun sneak peek of the cover and summary of the book.

 About the Book:
Cordelia Owens can weave a dream around anything and is well used to winning the hearts of everyone in Savannah with her whimsy. Even when she receives word that her sweetheart has been lost during a raid on a Yankee vessel, she clings to hope and comes up with many a romantic tale of his eventual homecoming to reassure his mother and sister.

But Phineas Dunn finds nothing redemptive in the first horrors of war. Struggling for months to make it home alive, he returns to Savannah injured and cynical, and all too sure that he is not the hero Cordelia seems determined to make him.

As the War Between the States rages ever nearer and Savannah's slaves start sneaking away to the islands off the coast to join the Yankees, both Phin and Cordelia get caught up in questions they never thought they'd have to ask--questions that threaten the very dreams of a future they'd cherished.

Look for this new book coming out January 5, 2021.

The Edge of Everywhen by A.S. Mackey

Now that I have a middler schooler, I'm finding that it is increasingly harder to find good, fun, Christian fiction books for her. It seems like there isn't much new current christian fiction being written for this group of kids. So, I was excited to see this new book, The Edge of Everywhen by A.S. Mackey that just released in May 2020 from B&H Publishing.

From the Back Cover:
"Hello, Reader. I am honored to know you."
Tragedy is sometimes followed by mystery. At least that's what faces 13-year-old Piper and her brother, Phoenix, who has autism. Mourning the loss of their parents, they must move a thousand miles away to live with their insufferable Aunt Beryl. But it is in their aunt's cavernous library that Piper and Phoenix hear a mysterious book calling to them. Its name is Novus Fabula, and its story will change their lives forever.

"What's that you say? Books cannot speak? On the contrary, dear Reader. Quite the contrary. Books are one of the few things on this earth that truly speak. Let me show you."

Join Piper and Phoenix in the Verboten Library as they begin an intriguing journey of grief, wonder, and the search for Truth. If you stand with them at the edge of everywhen, you just might discover the story you need to hear as well.

My Thoughts:
This is not your typical book, The story is told from the perspective of a book known as Novus Fabula. I thought this was definitely a unique way to tell a story. I appreciated that the author explored the idea of autism with the character of Phoenix. I think it's great to encourage readers to grow in their understanding of disorders, and how they can help others feel more included. One thing I didn't like about this book is that God is referred to as "the Big Man." This only happened once, but I find that this whole idea of "the Big Man upstairs" is disrespectful.  Other than that, I really enjoyed reading this book. The story shouted the idea that everyone has a story and "everyone's story matters." It encourages kids to look beyond the exterior and see what may be troubling another person's heart. Overall, a great read for kids that adds a little magic.

My Rating: ★★★★

If I Were You by Lynn Austin

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be someone else?  Lynn Austin's newest novel, If I Were You, takes readers on a journey back in time to the 1940's when life was interrupted for a second time by a great world war and where two young girls each secretly wished they had the other's life.

From the Back Cover:
"Audrey sat in her own bedroom, sickened, and discovered that she still envied Eve Dawson--as she had all her life... She would gladly trade everything she owned to be her."

1950--In the wake of the war, Audrey Clarkson leaves her manor house in England for a fresh start in America with her young son. As a widowed war bride, Audrey needs the support of her American in-laws, whom she has never met. But she arrives to find that her longtime friend Eve Dawson has been impersonating her for the past four years. Unraveling this deception will force Audrey and Eve's secrets--and the complicated history of their friendship--to the surface.

1940--Eve and Audrey have been as different as two friends can be since the day they met at Wellingford Hall, where Eve's mother served as a lady's maid for Audrey's mother. As young women, those differences force them apart until the threat of Nazi invasion and war bring them back together. An American stationed in England brings a chance at love for Audrey, and the collapse of the class system gives Eve hope for a future with Audrey's brother. But in the wake of devastating loss, both women must make life-altering decisions that will set in motion a web of lies and push them both to the breaking point.

Book Trailer:

My Thoughts:
I enjoyed all the history woven into this story. Lynn always does such a great job including quality research for her novels, and the title for this book is perfect. You have two girls who were so different (one rich and one poor), and both of them envied each other's lives. It's easy to see why Eve would be envious of Audrey, but i think it was good to see that Audrey envied Eve too. Money doesn't solve all of your problems. This story compels the reader to imagine what life is like for someone else. It really is true you have no idea what another person's life is like unless you walk a mile in their shoes. Lynn Austin's story takes into account several different subjects--love, adultery, fornication, pride, and greed to name a few.  But the biggest theme throughout this story is forgiveness. Over and over, Audrey and Eve find that in order to have a good relationship, forgiveness must be present not only for each other, but also for themselves.

My Rating: ★★★★

Hadley Beckett's Next Dish by Bethany Turner

Do you enjoy watching cooking shows on TV?  Growing up I remember Julia Child being on our TV among other famous chefs. My mom loved watching the cooking shows, and she was amazing in the kitchen. It was fun to discover this new book by Bethany Turner called Hadley Beckett's Next Dish in which Bethany Turner's story takes on the culinary world with a cooking show inspired story!

From the Back Cover:
Get ready for a heaping helping of humor, romance, and second chances.
Celebrity chef Maxwell Cavanagh is known for many things: his multiple Michelin stars, his top-rated Culinary Channel show, To the Max, and most of all his horrible temper. Hadley Beckett, host of the Culinary Channel's other top-rated show, At Home with Hadley, is beloved for her Southern charm and for making her viewers feel like family.
When Max experiences a very public temper tantrum and is sent packing, his only chance to get back on TV and in the public's good graces is to work alongside Hadley. As these polar-opposite celeb chefs begin to peel away the layers of public persona and reputation, they will not only discover the key ingredients for getting along but also learn the secret recipe for unexpected forgiveness... and maybe even love. In the meantime, hide the knives.

My Thoughts:
This story was a fun, unique setting in the culinary, television network world. I liked how the author pitted the two main characters against each other in the beginning. It seemed like there was no way they could ever be around each other let alone work together. The characters definitely had a lot of banter back and forth, and some of this banter had me holding back laughter. The author definitely has a great sense of humor. The characters each showed some growth throughout the story; although, Max definitely had more room for growing than Hadley. I thought this story read like a good clean romance from the Hallmark Channel... not cheesy, but a fun romantic comedy.
I was surprised that there was only one reference to Jesus in the whole book. So for being a Christian fiction novel, there really wasn't all that much in this book about faith. There is a theme of forgiveness, but the author doesn't come right out and connect it to Hadley's faith. The reader is left wondering if Hadley is a Christian and where does Max stand? Max went to rehab and quotes his counselor, Buzz, but I wish Max would of had a heart change because of seeing his need for Jesus.

So while I wish there would of been more of a connection to Jesus with Max's turn-around, the story was still enjoyable to read.

Big and Little Activity Devotional written by Rachel C. Swanson & Illustrated by Jacy Corral

The Big and Little Activity Devotional by Rachel C. Swanson is a book designed for parents to use with their children to help them connect while they read a verse and do an activity. One side of the flip page has an appropriate activity for a child to do and the other side, is a similar but more difficult activity for the adult. There is a verse and devotional thought to read as well as questions to answer for the kids and for the grownups. There are a variety of activities to keep little hands busy while you talk. Some of the activities included are: mazes, Sudoku, word search, dot to dot, color by number, step by step drawing, decoding, crossword puzzles, coloring, search and find, and more.

I like how the activity book isn't just full of activities for kids to do, but encourages the parent and the child to engage in thoughtful conversation about a Bible verse. I like that it also includes fun activities that both child and parent can enjoy together.

It's a good resource that encourages family time in our busy schedules! So if you're looking for a way to connect with your child, pick up this activity devotional to add to your family time at home.

The Lost Lieutenant by Erica Vetsch and a Giveaway!

Do you enjoy a good Regency Era romance story? Erica Vetsch has released a new series through Kregel Publications called Serendipity and Secrets. This first book, The Lost Lieutenant, begins the series in Berkshire, England in the year 1813.

From the Back Cover:
Evan Eldridge never meant to be a war hero--he just wanted to fight Napoleon for the future of his country. And he certainly didn't think that saving the life of a peer would mean being made the Earl of Whitelock. But when the life you save is dear to the Prince Regent, things can change in a hurry.

Now Evan has a new title, a manor house in shambles, and a stranger for a bride, all thrust upon him by a grateful ruler. What he doesn't have are all his memories. Traumatized as a result of his wounds and bravery on the battlefield, Evan knows there's something he can't quite remember. It's important, dangerous--and if he doesn't recall it in time, will jeopardize not only his marriage but someone's very life.

Readers who enjoy Julie Klassen, Carolyn Miller, and Kristi Ann Hunter will love diving into this brand-new Regency series filled with suspense, aristocratic struggles, and a firm foundation of faith.

Read an excerpt from Kregel by clicking here!
He's doing what he can to save the Prince Regent's life . . . but can he save his new marriage as well?

My Thoughts:
This is the first book I have read by Erica Vetsch, and I thoroughly enjoyed her story! Evan Eldridge is having quite the time trying to remember what happened to him, and it adds such mystery to the story. You can sense there is something urgent that needs to be remembered, but are kept wondering as the Lieutenant remembers more and more of the pieces to the event that changed his life forever. The characters go through a big transformation in this story as they each face challenges they didn't ask for. The theme of trust is beautifully woven throughout the story, and shows the reader that trust between people is something that is precious. I'm looking forward to continuing the story in the second book, The Gentleman Spy, when it releases July 28, 2020!

The Chisholm Trail Bride by Kathleen Y'Barbo (The Daughter of the Mayflower series, book 12))

The Daughters of the Mayflower series explores the line of descendants of those who trail-blazed a new path crossing an ocean on the Mayflower to begin our great American history. The twelfth book in the series, The Chisholm Trial Bride by Kathleen Y'Barbo, just released in April 2020, and adds the story of the great American cattle drives of 1889.

From the Back Cover:
Lives Forever Change One Night on a Cattle Drive

Eliza Gentry's pursuit of marriage to the son of her family's sworn enemy has cost her greatly. Ben Barnhart will never be Wyatt Creed, her best friend from childhood, but Ben has stubbornly wooed her heart.

Furious at his daughter's choices, Eliza's father has her watched, both in New Orleans and Galveston, by the steadfast eye of John Brady, a detective he had hired to see to her safety. With danger at every turn--not the least of which to his heart--can John keep his focus on the present job when a night on the Chisholm Trail nine years ago still haunts his every move?

My Thoughts:
I liked how the story began when Eliza was a young girl of twelve years old and gave the reader a glimpse into her childhood and relationship with Wyatt Creed. It helped to identify with her when the story fast-forwards nine years and Eliza is running into choices of rebellion with a man her family doesn't approve of. There is a bit of a mystery for Eliza as to what happened long ago on that Chisholm Trial drive that cost the life of her best friend. It's a moment that has had lasting affects on her life and her heart. In the current time period, Ben Barnhart, the man she was unofficially engaged to is stubborn and determined. The story keeps you wondering just how bad he really is, and what he is capable of doing. I enjoyed this story and the book kept me reading into the wee hours to see how the story would all wrap up! Kathleen Y'Barbo has written a great adventurous novel to add to The Daughter of the Mayflower collection.

The Wingfeather Saga by Andrew Peterson

Did you know that Andrew Peterson, the singer-songwriter and recording artist of 10 albums, is also the author of The Wingfeather Saga? I'm not sure how I missed this, but I had no idea he had written any books. There are 4 books in the series, and they are being re-released in hardback collectors editions. These new editions have added illustrations that help fuel the imaginative world Peterson has created through his gift of story telling. The first two hardcover books, On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness and North! or Be Eaten were just re-released on March 10, 2020, and the third and Fourth books, The Monsters in the Hollows and The Warden and the Wolf King, will be coming September 15, 2020.

From the Back Cover:

Book 1: Once, in a cottage above the cliffs on the Dark Sea of Darkness, there lived three children and their trusty dog, Nugget.

Janner Igiby, his brother, Tink, and their disabled sister, Leeli, are gifted children as all children are, loved well by a noble mother and ex-pirate grandfather. But they will need all their gifts and all that they love to survive the evil pursuit of the venomous Fangs of Dang, who have crossed the dark sea to rule the land with malice. The Igibys hold the secret to the lost legend and jewels of good King Wingfeather of the Shining Isle of Anniera.

Book 2: Wild Escapes. A Desperate Journey. And the ghastly Fangs of Dang.
Janner, Tink and Leeli Igiby thought they were normal children with normal lives and a normal past. But now they know they're really the lost Jewels of Anniera, heirs to a legendary kingdom across the sea, and suddenly everyone want to kill them.
In order to survive, the Igibys must flee to the safety of the Ice Prairies, where the lizard-like Fangs of Dang cannot follow. First, however, they have to escape the monsters of Glipwood Forest, the thieving Stranders of the East Bend, and the dreaded Fork Factory.
But even more dangerous are the jealousy and bitterness that threaten to tear them apart. Janner and his siblings must learn the hard way that the love of a family is more important than anything else.

 My Thoughts:

This story was so imaginative and fun! I was sad that I only had the first two books to read, and I can't wait to get the other two! Andrew Peterson leads the reader on an adventurous ride through hollows, abandoned ghostly mansions, rockroach invested valleys, and dark forests filled with toothy cows.  The creatures are quite the combination of animals with suitable silly names. At first, it was a little hard to get my head around all the opening paragraphs of background information especially with all of the names of the different lands I was unsure of how to pronounce. Luckily for me, during our stay-at-home order for the Coronavirus, Andrew Peterson himself read the first two books aloud each night on his Facebook page. It definitely helped with hearing him pronounce these names! (I'm not sure if the reading will still be up at the time you read this review. But you can check out his YouTube account by clicking here.) The added illustrations were delightful, and I'm sure the kids reading these books will enjoy them.  The Igiby children are each learning and growing in different ways throughout the story. I appreciated the struggle the characters went through and the lessons that were learned with regard to jealousy, bitterness, secrets and shame.
If your tween is looking for a series that will take them on a fun adventure, then pick up these new hardback books of Andrew Peterson's Wingfeather Saga! I will also say that these books are enjoyable for adults too, so don't be afraid to pick them up for yourself! Make sure to look for the next two books coming out in September 2020!

For All Who Wander by Robin Dance

Have you ever gone through a season of feeling distant from God, wandering in your own desert feeling a bit lost in life?  In her new book, For All Who Wander, Robin Dance has shared her season of wandering and how God used it in her life to bring her back to Himself.

From the Back Cover:
"Lord, I believe. Help my unbelief!" (Mark 9:24)

Her circumstances might not have been as dramatic as the father asking Jesus for a miracle, but Robin felt just as desperate in her faith. Yet feeling lost in a spiritual desert, she felt like it was the most honest prayer she could offer. Can you relate to struggling in your faith but longing to believe?
Faith is tidy and neat for some, never unwavering and always so sure. And maybe that's how you used to feel--before the heartbreak or challenges or exhaustion of life set in--but now your once-sure beliefs are less certain, the prescribed Sunday school answers no longer enough.

Inviting you to find hope and healing in your own story within the pages of hers, in For All Who Wander, Robin Dance will help you:

Abandon the guilt and shame attached to your questions or doubts.
Grasp a broader understanding of God's unrelenting faithfulness.
Reframe your view of difficulties and disappointments as you understand their redemptive and transformative value.
Trust that God is working in your wandering to restore and strengthen your faith.

As you walk through Robin's story with her, you'll discover that sometimes wandering is the path that leads you back to God.

My Thoughts:
This book was an interesting read for me. I enjoyed reading Robin's story and like others found part of my story among hers. I've struggled with doubting like many other Christians have at some point in their Christian walk. Robin's story is open and truthful about the struggle she faced, and how God used the struggle to reveal what was truly going on in her heart.  I appreciate that she not only tells her story, but also shares the truth of God's Word to point her readers to Jesus. It was encouraging to know that I'm not the only one, and that even a season of doubting and wandering can be used in God's plan for your life.

The Way to the Savior: A Family Easter Devotional by Jeff and Abbey Land

Easter is coming up soon and there is a new product published by B& H Kids called The Way to the Savior: A Family Easter Devotional by Jeff and Abbey Land.

From the Back Cover:
Prepare your hearts for Easter!
Amid the bustle of springtime chores and storefront bunnies, reminding your children of the true meaning of Easter can be a challenge. But this forty-day devotional brings the family together during Lent for a meaningful Easter season focused on Christ instead.
The Way to the Savior guides families through eight aspects of Lent and ends with a focus on Jesus' last days and resurrection.
With activity ideas and space to add Easter memories as well, this collection of devotions will become a family keepsake, bringing family together to celebrate the Easter season and the way to the Savior year after year.

My Thoughts:
This devotional book is meant to be read during the season of Lent, and there are 40 days included in the book. The authors include a note to the parents in the beginning to help them understand how to use this book during the days leading up to Easter. There are 8 themes covered in this book--Hope, Love, Thanksgiving, Commitment, Forgiveness, Trust, Obedience, and Jesus' Last Days. Each day a main verse is focused on with a devotional thought, short written prayer and an application thought or question for the family to answer. The illustrations are just as beautiful as the cover, and will definitely draw the eyes of little ones. I thought that the short devotionals were useful in pointing the family to Jesus and helping to keep Him the focus in the days leading up to Easter. This is a good resource to help bring the importance of Easter into family devotional time without adding the burden of a huge time commitment.

The Brightest of Dreams by Susan Anne Mason (Canadian Crossings series, Book 3)

The final book in Susan Anne Mason's Canadian Crossings series, The Brightest of Dreams, just released in February 2020. This last book of the series tells the story of Quinten Aspinall as he crosses the ocean to search for his three siblings who were sent away from England to Canada as part of re-homing orphans as indentured laborers until the age of 18.

From the Back Cover:
He crosses an ocean to reunite his family. But meeting her makes him question everything.

Quinten Aspinall is determined to fulfill a promise he made to his deceased father to keep his family together. To do so, he must travel to Canada to find his younger siblings, who were sent there as indentured workers while Quinn was away at war. But before he leaves, his employer offers him a deal. If Quinn can find the man's wayward niece, who ran off with a Canadian soldier, and bring her back, then he will receive his own tenant farm, enabling him to provide a home for his ailing mother and siblings.

Julia Holloway's decision to come to Toronto has been met with one disaster after another. When her uncle's employee rescues her from a bad situation, she fears she can never repay Quinn's kindness. So when he asks for her help to find his sister, she agrees. The quest draws the two of them together, but soon afterward, Julia receives devastating news that will change her life forever.

Torn between reuniting his family and protecting Julia, will Quinn have to sacrifice his chance at happiness to finally keep his promise?

My Thoughts:
I thought this was a good concluding story to this three book series. Quinten's story is one that has the reader routing for him to pull his family back together again even though it seems impossible. Not all stories are "rosy," and the author portrays that well with the heartbreak that happened with the British children who were brought over from England to Canada to work on farms. So many children were frightened and hoping for a good home, but many ended up with awful situations. I was not aware of this time in history until I read Carrie Turansky's book, No Ocean Too Wide.  I'm glad to see authors bringing to light this part of Canada's history, and helping readers to understand all that these children went through. Although, Quinten finding his siblings is only part of this grand story. Quinten finds that his plans are beginning to change once he encounters the beautiful Julia Holloway. Now, he must choose between family obligations and a woman he loves. It was interesting to see how his character changes throughout the story battling inside himself to do what it right. I thought the author did a great job creating tension and resolution throughout this story. It kept the story moving and the reader interested.

The Highest of Hopes by Susan Anne Mason (Canadian Crossings Book 2)

Imagine finding out that the father you were told died of a broken heart is actually alive and living in another country? This is the story of Emmaline Moore. She always believed herself to be an orphan, but has found out that her father is alive and in Canada.

From the Back Cover:

For years she searched for somewhere to belong. But is she looking in the right place?

After her beloved grandfather's death, Emmaline Moore is shocked to discover that her deceased father is actually alive in Canada. Having no other family, Emma decides she must find him, and so embarks on a journey across the ocean, accompanied by her best friend Jonathan. Unfortunately, Randall Moore and his family aren't thrilled by her arrival, fearing her sudden appearance will hinder his chance at becoming mayor of Toronto in 1919. Despite everything, Emma remains determined to gain their affection.
Jonathan Rowe has secretly loved Emma for years and hopes that during their trip he can win her heart. Concerned that Randall might reject her, Jonathan is ready to console Emma and bring her home. But when she informs him that she has no intention of returning to England, Jonathan fears he'll lose her forever. Is there any way to convince her that the love she seeks could be right in front of her?

My Thoughts:
After reading the first book, I was not sure where this next book would pick up. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the author is going to tell the stories of three individuals that met by chance on their ocean voyage from England to Canada. The first book, The Best of Intentions, tells the story of Grace Abernathy, and this book, The Highest of Hopes, tells the story of Emmaline Moore.
I thought it was a good story and found the mystery surrounding Emma's mom and dad interesting. What truly happened when she was born, and why would a father abandon a newborn? There was a lot of tension throughout this whole story between Emma, her father's family, and also at times with Jonathan. Emma's character is a bit on the reckless side rushing ahead of sound advice to do whatever her heart dictates. She seems like one of those people that has to learn things the hard way. Her best friend Jonathan is definitely more level-headed, but struggles to share his true feelings for Emma. The reader is left to wonder whether they will ever get together. Throughout the story, both of these character have a lot to learn about love and acceptance not just from each other, but especially how God sees them too.

I would suggest that the series be read in order since the characters do appear in all three of these books. Susan's third book, The Brightest of Dreams, just released in February 2020, so watch for my review of that book coming soon!

Breaking Anxiety's Grip: How to Reclaim the Peace God Promises by Dr. Michelle Bengtson

Anxiety and depression are becoming common words used today, but it hasn't always been this way. The church is attempting to do better in this area, and it is a good change to see happening. Maybe it's because people who have actually been down this road are finally writing to help others. Dr. Michelle Bengtson is one of those people. She has faced worry, anxiety, and fear, and is using her experience to help point others to Jesus.

From the Back Cover:
No question, we have a lot to worry about. Children, jobs, homes, health, finances, and more. The solution isn't to rid ourselves of the sources of anxiety--as if we could. Instead, we need to recognize that anxiety originates from a spiritual influence and that we can fight back using the God-given weapons of power, love, and a sound mind.
Sharing her own story of emerging from the battle with anxiety as well as the stories of others, Dr. Michelle Bengston reminds you of your identity as a follower of Christ and of the peace he promises you in spite of everything. She provides tools to cope with the crushing emotional burden of anxiety now and, more importantly, shows you how to reclaim God's peace as a way of life so that you can break anxiety's grip.

My Thoughts:
I thought this book was a good read. I liked how the author took the time to define the terms we often throw around--Worry, Anxiety, Fear and Panic. Dr. Bengtson then talks about how each of these characteristics are birthed in our lives through physical, cognitive, emotional and spiritual avenues. She addresses worry, anxiety and fear in their own chapters and then ends with chapters on how God has given us power, love and a sound mind to fight against the spirit of fear.

I found a lot of great advice in Dr. Michelle Bengtson's book, but I did have an issue with chapter 9 Reclaim Your Power when the author states her interpretation of Psalm 91:1-7.

"When we trust him as our refuge, he promises in verse 3 and 4 that he will rescue us from every trap set for us, protect us from deadly diseases designed to kill us, and hide us under his sheltering wings where we cannot be open prey."
"Verses 5-7 explain that when we trust God, we won't fear what could happen outside his safety, whether physical attacks on our body or the area around us, because God promises safety from such evil things." (page 148)

It sounds like she is saying that you won't get a deadly disease or physical attacks if we trust God. But I know from experience, friends, who loved Jesus with all their hearts, get diseases and die. So like with any book, you must read keeping in mind what you know to be true from Scripture because man's thoughts are just that... man's thoughts.
The few things I disagreed with are so small in comparison to the vast good material in this book that can be a huge help to those wanting to fight against fear, anxiety and worry. So I would still say that this is a book worth checking out!

My Rating: ★★★★
